How to install CCTV camera system for classroom (PoE IP system, recommended for schools)

Important reminder: Classroom CCTV involves minors' privacy and data protection. Before installation, confirm local education & data protection rules, get school/parent consent, post clear notice, use video-only (turn off audio recording), limit footage access and set a short retention period (usually 7 to30 days). Do not install in restrooms, changing rooms or counselling rooms.

1. Prepare equipment & tools

Recommended set: Vandal-proof dome PoE IP cameras (best for ceiling classroom installation), PoE NVR (Network Video Recorder), surveillance HDD, Cat5e/Cat6 Ethernet cables, HDMI cable, monitor, mouse, mounting brackets, drill, wall anchors, cable trunking, RJ45 crimping tool, cable tester.

  • PoE advantage: One single Ethernet cable carries both power and video data, no separate power adapter at each camera. Max cable distance: 100 m.
  • Choose: 4MP / 5MP, 2.8mm wide-angle lens for full classroom coverage, IR for low light.
  • Avoid built-in audio unless local law fully permits.

2. Site planning & camera positioning

  1. Draw a classroom layout map.
  2. Mount dome cameras on ceiling, 2.5C3 m high, angle slightly downwards.
  3. Cover the whole classroom, avoid direct sunlight (glare). Do not aim to capture students' faces unnecessarily if not required; avoid focusing on private notes.
  4. Mark cable routes, use trunking to hide wires and protect cables from damage by students.
  5. Select a secure locked cabinet for NVR, away from student access.

3. Bench test first (critical step)

Test all devices on a table before drilling and mounting:

  1. Install the hard disk inside NVR (SATA cable + power cable, fix with screws).
  2. Connect cameras to PoE ports of NVR with LAN cables.
  3. Connect NVR to monitor via HDMI, plug in mouse and power.
  4. Power on, check all camera images appear normally. Fix bad cables or inactive cameras now.

4. Run cables and mount cameras

  1. Pull Cat6 cables along planned trunking routes from NVR cabinet to each camera point, leave slack at both ends. Label every cable.
  2. Drill holes, fix mounting base on ceiling, attach dome camera.
  3. Plug the LAN cable into camera PoE port, tidy cables inside the bracket/trunking.

5. Connect the whole system

  1. Plug all camera LAN cables into PoE ports of NVR.
  2. HDMI from NVR to monitor; mouse to NVR USB.
  3. Connect NVR to school LAN (only if you need remote view on authorized staff phones/PCs).

Do NOT plug camera cables into normal non-PoE switch ports.

6. NVR configuration

  1. Boot NVR, set a strong admin password, set correct time zone and date/time (very important for playback evidence).
  2. Format the installed hard drive.
  3. Recording setup:
    • Mode: Motion detection recording (save storage) or scheduled recording (only during school hours). H.265 compression is recommended.
    • Set footage retention time (follow school policy, e.g. 14 days; auto-delete old videos).
  4. User permission: Create separate accounts; only authorized staff can view or export footage. Disable public access.
  5. Activate mobile app for authorized remote viewing if needed.
  6. Turn off audio recording function.

7. Final check & acceptance

  1. Check every camera live view, adjust angle to remove blind spots and glare.
  2. Test playback, motion trigger, export function.
  3. Check cable stability, locked NVR cabinet.
  4. Post CCTV warning notice clearly outside the classroom.
  5. Keep installation record, password and device log safely.

8. Regular maintenance

  • Clean camera lens periodically
  • Check HDD health
  • Update NVR firmware for security
  • Review access logs of footage
