Firmware updates for an alarm system vary a lot by brand and model, so the exact steps depend on what system you have. Here's the general process that covers most systems:
General firmware update flow:
- Check for updates Most modern systems do this automatically. You can also check via:
- The system's touchscreen keypad (Settings - System/Firmware)
- The companion mobile app (usually under Settings - System - Software Update)
- The manufacturer's website (download the firmware file to a USB drive)
- Back up settings Save your panel configuration/programming (installer code, zones, users, schedules) before updating, in case settings reset.
- Perform the update Either:
- Over-the-air (OTA) via app/panel if the panel is online
- Via USB/SD card if the panel has no internet connection
- Restart and verify Reboot the panel, then confirm the new version shows in System Info and that all zones, sensors, and keypads still report correctly.
Important cautions:
- Do a firmware update only if a trained installer/programmer is present on many panels (e.g., DSC, Honeywell/Resideo, Paradox), updating the wrong region/version can lock the panel or erase programming.
- Never interrupt power during the update a failed flash can brick the panel.
- Some systems (e.g., monitored alarms) require re-arming and may need the central station / monitoring provider notified after updates.
